The Academic Advisor serves as a member of the Advising Services staff and exists to provide comprehensive academic advising to undergraduate students and to promote academic advising as an essential tool for academic success and a critical component of the educational experience. The primary responsibility of this position is to advise University undecided and Arts and Sciences undeclared students. This position has responsibilities to teach students the purpose of General Education, the academic opportunities across colleges and Arts and Sciences curriculum. The Academic Advisor also fosters students' intellectual and personal development toward academic success, interprets and advises students on policies and procedures of the University and College of Arts and Sciences, provides all services related to new student and transfer orientation advising sessions and conducts academic probation, pre-law, pre-health, and pre-teaching academic advising appointments. A Master’s degree (or near completion) required. Experience working with students in a college or university setting required. Candidates who possess a Liberal Arts educational background, have worked in diverse academic environments, and have experience in advising at the college or university level are preferred. Candidates should possess strong written and oral communication skills, appropriate computer skills and experience with information technologies (for example, web development, various software applications, Degree Audit Reporting System, etc.), and organizational skills and the ability to handle simultaneous projects. This position reports to the Director of Student Activities and assists with the administration, fiscal management, and evaluation of approximately 200 student programs sponsored annually through the Office of Student Activities. The successful candidate will be responsible for directly advising student committees and supervising two graduate assistants. This individual will also be responsible for supervising up to four graduate assistants, four student employees and a full-time senior secretary in the absence of the Director. The Office of Student Activities serves in an advisory capacity with the seven Central Program Council committees (All Campus Events, Campus Entertainment Board, Cultural Attractions Committee, Film, Issues, Visual Arts and the Women’s Coordinating Council.) A Master's degree and a minimum of three years full-time experience in higher education administration, student personnel or related field required.
