| ASSISTANT PROFESSOR - Plant Sciences Department-
The successful candidate will establish a nationally recognized extension and research program in sustainable landscape horticulture related to ornamental production and management. The position will provide innovative and comprehensive support for research, promotion and adoption of best practices (BMPs) for landscape and commercial ornamental plant production and management, including increased use of low-input, under-utilized and improved pest- and disease-resistant ornamental and native plants. The successful program will include design and delivery of strategies to enhance sustainability and efficiency in ornamental production systems. Major focal areas can emphasize optimization of nutrient inputs, water-use and landscape management efficiencies. Other areas of expertise may include quantification and development of novel ornamental plants, alternatives for potentially invasive plant selections and ornamental plant production environments, The successful candidate will provide leadership in increasing commercial grower, landscape professional and consumer awareness and interest in sustainability for landscapes and ornamental production systems while interacting and working cooperatively with scientists in the Institute of Agriculture, other universities, government agencies and private companies. The candidate will be expected to aggressively seek extramural funding, to publish and present research findings and to disseminate Extension information through scholarly articles, web resources, news releases and other Extension outlets. Opportunities exist for active participation in classroom teaching, graduate student mentoring and training programs. The candidate will be expected to develop, implement and evaluate educational programs that optimize commercial production and landscape management for ornamental plants and lead to increased environmental sustainability in landscapes and production facilities. Supporting greenhouse and nursery facilities for the program will be located on the Knoxville Campus of The University of Tennessee's Institute of Agriculture. The candidate should have a PhD in Horticulture, Crop Science or a related plant science or sustainable agriculture discipline. Experience and/or specialized training in horticultural plant production systems or post-harvest physiology, commercial or professional landscape management, urban forestry or environmental sustainability/low-input landscapes are highly desired. Post-doctoral research and/or extension/outreach experience is desired. Familiarity with the Sustainability Sites Initiative for LEED certification or benchmarking for landscape sustainability is encouraged. Responsibilities of this position include: developing and leading a nationally recognized integrated extension and research program in one of the following areas: Sustainable energy utilization which may include expertise in areas such as alternative energy sources; energy recovery and conservation and harvesting, storage and transportation of biomass or Sustainable water resources which may include expertise in areas such as water recycling and reuse; storm water runoff and capture; management of groundwater and surface water resources; and domestic, industrial and agricultural water demand; publish in recognized peer-reviewed journals, extension publications and related outlets for professional peers and others. Successfully obtain external funding from government and private sources in support of extension and research programs. Participate in interdisciplinary activities throughout the department, Institute of Agriculture and university. A PhD in biosystems, biological, agricultural or equivalent engineering degree is required. Professional Engineering (PE) Licensure or the ability to complete licensure prior to tenure is preferred. Efforts will be focused on predicting biological system responses to environmental stimuli. Topics could include: enhancing biomass or commodity production and conversion; modeling plant, animal or aquatic responses to health stressors; environmental fate/impact of pollutants; or other areas. Excellent field and laboratory facilities and full-time staff are available to help support this endeavor. Opportunities exist to collaborate with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. | ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF ORGANIC & SUSTAINABLE RESEARCH/TEACHING - Plant Sciences-
The successful candidate will establish a nationally recognized research program in organic and alternative cropping systems for vegetable and other specialty crops. Designing successful approaches to sustainable/organic production systems using both basic and applied crop physiology will be a major focus of the program. The position will provide innovative and comprehensive research support for new and developing market areas in Tennessee. The successful candidate will provide leadership for an organics program in this area while interacting and working cooperatively with scientists in the Institute of Agriculture, other universities, government agencies and private companies. The candidate will be expected to aggressively seek extramural funding, to publish and present research finding, and to actively participate in classroom teaching, graduate school mentoring and training programs. The candidate will be expected to develop core courses in organic and sustainable production. The candidate's lab will reside in a modern, 133,000 square foot, multi-disciplinary plant biotechnology research building. Supporting greenhouse facilities for the program are located on the Organic Crops Unit in Knoxville, a part of the East Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center. The University of Tennessee has dedicated a 90-acre farm as the Organic Crops Unit, with 21 acres under cultivation and 14 of those acres currently in transition toward certified organic production. Research has been initiated on cover cropping, alternative crops, farmscaping, minimum tillage and season extension. Opportunities also exist to conduct research on other AgResearch and Education Centers located across the state in geographically distinct regions. Support staff at the Centers aid in project set-up and maintenance. The candidate will have access to shared equipment and facilities of our Genomics Hub, an interdepartmental molecular facility dedicated to agricultural research. The candidate should have a PhD in Horticulture, Crop Science or a related discipline with training an experience in crop production. Post-doctoral research and teaching experience is desired. | ASSISTANT PROFESSOR - School of Music-
Nine-month tenure-track appointment beginning Fall Semester, 2010. Doctorate required (ABD considered, but must be completed by starting date of 8-1-10). Proven successful experience as a choral director at the college/university level preferred. At least three years successful public school experience and a commitment to teacher training are required. Ability to teach courses in vocal music education is required. Demonstrated abilities in organization and communication and the ability to work effectively with faculty, students and colleagues in the field are necessary. Commitment to preparing high quality pre-service music educators in a collaborative and collegial teaching and learning environment is necessary. This position is a critical blend between choral conducting and vocal music methods. This faculty member will conduct a major choral ensemble, teach courses in choral music methods and conducting, coordinate and supervise course-related field experiences, supervise student teachers and advise music education majors. The successful candidate will maintain an active schedule of recruitment and guest conducting, provide workshops and actively participate in professional choral and music education organizations, develop regional and national visibility as an ensemble director and educator, and develop and maintain positive relationships with secondary school choral directors. | ASSISTANT /ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR - Large Animal Clinical Sciences-
This appointment will be expected to provide professional services which include in house hospital duties, client and referral veterinary services and professional practice consultations. The large and small animal anesthesiology group (three faculty supervisors) offers a three-year ACVA residency program. Currently, three residents are enrolled. The individual selected for this position must have a strong interest in resident training. In discover, the successful candidate will pursue an externally funded research program leading to ;publications in prominent discipline and research focused journals. Individuals hired at the associate professor rank will be expected to mentor younger faculty in hypothesis driven research. The College of Veterinary Medicine has an essential priority of training professional students in large animal disciplines. In addition to clinical instruction, the successful candidate will participate in the delivery of didactic lectures and laboratories. Applicants having credentials consistent with appointments at the assistant or associate professional ranks will be considered. Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree and be eligible to take anesthesia board exams or board certified by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiology. The Board of Pathobiology at The University of Tennessee seeks applications for a tenure track or non-tenure track Clinical Pathologist position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. The position is held presently by a senior colleague who plans to retire in the Fall of 2008. The person hired will join two board certified clinical pathologists currently on the faculty. A DVM or equivalent degree and ACVP board certification or eligibility are required. A PhD or MSW degree or equivalent research or scholarly experience is desirable, but not required. Responsibilities include diagnostic service, teaching of veterinary students and residents, and scholarly activity.
