The UT Leadership Institute provides leadership training to leaders within the University of Tennessee and other institutions of higher education in the state. The week-long Institute is conducted on a biennial basis for 50 participants recommended by the leadership of their respective institutions.
The primary objective of the Institute is to increase participants' understanding of leadership in higher education and how they can be effective leaders. The training is experientially based with participants immersed in simulations and exercises to provide them with new information and perspectives on working effectively with others. The specific topics covered during the week are:
- Defining Leadership
Participants develop personal definitions of leadership to clarify and express their visions of effective leadership.
- Self-Assessment of Personal Leadership Characteristics
Participants are provided with various opportunities to assess their individual characteristics to help identify personal strengths and weaknesses that contribute to or detract from their effectiveness as leaders.
- Formal and Informal Interaction with University Leaders
Participants have the opportunity hear and interact informally with the president, vice presidents, and chancellors of the university as they talk about and react to questions on leadership and other issues in higher education.
- Organizational Dynamics and Functions
Participants experience the barriers to effective communication, problem-solving, and decision-making within a simulated organization beset by rules, practices, and traditions. Throughout the experience, facilitators help participants mine their personal experiences to gain greater clarity and understanding about leadership issues faced by all levels of the organization. They develop opportunities for partnerships to move the organization forward.
- Organizational and Campus Culture
Programs on culture provide insight into communication and leadership styles.
Identify and discuss issues related to the future direction of higher education and the decisions that must be made in a changing environment.
Meet with colleagues from different institutions who share an
interest in leadership within higher education.
Foster your ability to deal more fairly with others and to share in fulfilling the institution's mission.
Recognize your potential to make a difference in the outcomes and successes of your institution.
